Rocket tours with '88 Olympic team
Sneak preview of Russian Dream Team
Taking adavantage of the National Hockey League's lockout of players and a two week break in the Russian International Hockey league season, organizers put together a series of games between Russian NHL stars and local teams to raise money for minor hockey.
"This is a sneak preview of the Russian Dream team for the 1998 Olympics", said organizer Seve Kukushkin, Russia's best known sports columist. "It is wonderful for Russian hockey fans to again see their heroes playing at home".
Along with the aging KLM line (vladimir Krutov, who now plays in Sweden, Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov, both with San Jose Sharks) the Russian stars offered what could be the most powerful offensive force in the history of hockey.
NHL All-Stars Pavel Bure, Sergei Federov of the Detroit Red Wings and Alexander Mogilny of the Buffalo Sabres, who combined for more than 150 goals last season in the NHL, were reunited on one line for a five game tour that started in Moscow on November 4th with games scheduled for Yaroslav, Nizhni Novogorod, Novosibirsk and St.Petersburg.
Most of the players returning for the tour were the famous Central Army team, which, prior to the break up of the Soviet Union, was arguably the best club in the world and which provided the nucleus of the perennial world championship national team.
Other players for the All-Stars included V. Fetisov, A. Semak and V. Zelepukin of the New Jersey Devils, A. Kasatonov of the Boston Bruins, V. Kemensky and A. Gusarov of the Quebec Nordiques, V. Konstantinov of the Detroit red Wings, M. Shtalenkov of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, D. Kasparitis and V. Malakov of the New York Islanders, N. Borschevsky of the Toronto Maple Leafs, S. Nemchinov, S. Zubov, A. Karpovstsev and A. Kovalov of the New York Rangers, V. Prokhorov of the St. Louis Blues and A. Trefilov of the Calgary Flames.
During the All-Star tour, the stars were originally put up at a Moscow hotel owned by the Russian Orthodox Church. The hotel was packed full of security guards (remember the threats on Russian NHLers from organized crime?)
Rooms at the church hotel went for $200 per night but according to the Boston Globe newspaper, Pavel Bure received the equivalent of an upgrade to a $500-a-night, three room suite that included a jacuzzi.
"Pavel was unbelievable on the tour", said Igor larionov, former Canuck teammate and now San Jose Shark. "He scored four goals in eight minutes in a game in Novosibirsk (Siberia) with his grandfather in the audience. The fans gave him an ovation. We won 17-6 and the people were going crazy. Can you imagine him in that big ice surface in Sweden with the Gretzky tour? We'd just just give him the puck and get out of his way. Coast to coast, just like Siberia".
