On Saturday, July 8th, the Vancouver Canucks acquired all-star winger Alexander Mogilny and a 5th round draft choice (119th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for center Mike Peca, defenceman Mike Wilson and the Canucks first round draft choice (14th overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. Mogilny, 26, led the Buffalo Sabres during the 1994-95 season with 19 goals, 28 assists for 47 points in 44 games played. In 1992-93 Alexander recorded a career high 76 goals, 51 assists for 127 points in 77 games played. Mogilny, five feet 11 inches, 187 pounds, represented the Buffalo sabres at athe 1992, 1993 and 1994 All-Star Games and was selected to the NHL second All-Star team in 1993. Born in Khabarovsk, USSR, Mogilny was Buffalo's 4th choice, 89th overall in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. Mogilny joined the Central red Army club at age 17 and won a gold medal with the Soviet Union at the 1988 Olympics making him the youngest Soviet hockey player ever to do so. He also played in the World Junior Championships for the Soviet Union in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Pavel Bure was Vancouver's 4th choice in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Bure recorded 34 goals and 26 assists for 60 points in 65 games played during his rookie season in 1991-92 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL Rookie-of-the-Year. The award was the first post-season award won by a Canuck player. Pavel currently holds or shares 17 club regular season records and 12 play-off records. Bure posted two back-to-back 60 goal seasons (1991-92 and 1992-93) and has led the Canucks in goal scoring for the past four seasons and has led the team in total points for the past three seasons. Bure represented the Vancouver Canucks at the 1993 and 1994 NHL All-Star Games and was selected to the NHL First All-Star team in 1994, a franchise first. Prior to joining the Vancouver Canucks, Pavel played for the medal winning Soviet teams in 1991 (silver), 1990 (gold) and 1989 (gold) World Junior Championships. During the 1989 World Junior Championships in Anchorage Alaska, Pavel played on a line with the newest memeber of the Vancouver Canucks, Alexander Mogilny. Bure scored 8 goals and 6 assists for 14 points during the 1989 World Junior Championships and was named top forward of the tournament. |
