Thursday, January 30, 1997 Canucks win a close oneWith a 2-1 win over the visiting New York Islanders in overtime, the Vancouver Canucks left town on a 10 day road trip tonight. After a scoreless first period, Sillinger gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead with his 14th goal, a power-play tally, 2:39 into the second period. Chris Joseph's shot from the right faceoff circle deflected off Sillinger in front and an Islander defenseman before slipping through Salo's pads. The Islanders pulled even at 8:52 of the third period. Derek Armstrong dug the puck out of the right corner and fed a pass into the slot to McInnis, who beat McLean over the right shoulder for his 15th goal. Lumme scored the backhand OT goal 90 seconds into overtime on a strong rush along the boards by Alex Mogilny. Pavel Bure was left off the scoreboard. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Monday, January 27, 1997 Canucks win a physical challengeCanucks without tough-guys Gino Odjick and Troy Crowder, took on the NHL's 2nd largest team, the San Jose Sharks, and beat them 5-2. In the third period, marked by many fights and physical liberties, the Canucks outshot the Sharks 17-8, and scored two unanswered goals, including Pavel Bures's unassisted break-away goal. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Saturday, January 25, 1997 Canucks lose to PhoenixPlaying their third game in four nights, the Vancouver Canucks lost 4-0 to Phoenix. Trading 26 shots a piece (Pavel lead the team with 3 shots), Vancouver looked like the more tired team, and did not have the puck luck or the bounces, after numerous close chances and hitting crossbars and goalposts ! ----Go back to the Headline list---- Thursday, January 23, 1997 Canucks lose to St.LouisPavel scored a goal, marking his 200th NHL goal in a losing bid tonight. With the Canucks leading 3-2 in the third period, St.Louis scored 2 unaswered goals late in the period to clinch the win. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Wednesday, January 22, 1997 Canucks in come from behind winThe Vancouver Canucks rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period, to win 4-3 in overtime on a goal by Alexander Mogilny, after killing a penalty in the last two minutes of the third period. Pavel assisted on the Canucks' first goal. It is interesting to note that Pavel Bure wore a new style Cooper helmet for this game. Apparently there is more foam protection on the inside to assist prevention from concussion injuries. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Monday, January 20, 1997 Canucks in strong winMarkus Naslund snapped a 13-game goalless drought with a pair of power-play tallies as the Vancouver Canucks routed the San Jose Sharks, 6-1, in a game that was originally postponed due to a blizzard in the Pacific Northwest. The game was scheduled for December 29th, but the blizzard conditions forced the postponement. Pavel scored a power play goal and helped set up another, to end up with two points for the game. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Saturday, January 18, 1997. Pavel notches 3 points in All-Star gamePavel Bure scored on all three Western Conference first three goals, notching two goals and assisting on another in a 11-7 losing effort against the Eastern Conference. Despite spectacular play in the third period, including many close-up shots, Pavel was unable to notch the elusive hat-trick. Bure also thoroughly enjoyed himself, his two goals and numerous opportunities causing him to remark on the style of play as opposed to a regular season game. "It's a different game, isn't it ?" he said when asked what it was like to get the puck in behind people as was his forte when he was putting up 60-goal seasons. "It is always nice to win but only one team could and losing didn't take away any of the fun." In the Speed Skater Super Skills, the team of Bondra, Daniel Alfredsson and Geoff Sanderson averaged 13.909 seconds to edge the Western team of Oleg Tverdovsky, Pavel Bure and Tony Amonte. Vancouver had a power play for the first 1:56 of overtime after Florida's Terry Carkner took a slashing penalty with four seconds to go in regulation. But the Canucks were unable to test Vanbiesbrouck. Mike Sillinger had a pair of goal including one on a penalty shot, and Esa Tikkanen also scored for Vancouver set up by Pavel Bure, which is 2-2-1 in its last five games ----Go back to the Headline list---- Sunday, January 12, 1997 Canucks StonewalledPaul Kariya atoned for an earlier mistake by scoring a power-play goal midway through the second period and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim held on for their third straight win, 3-2 over the Vancouver Canucks. The Ducks held Canucks snipers Pavel Bure and Alexander Mogilny to three harmless shots. "They weren't effective," Wilson said. "The first couple of shifts in the third period that they were on the ice they didn't get anything going. I was more worried about their fourth line (Donald Brashear, Gino Odjick and David Roberts). With those big wingers charging down at you on the forecheck, any defenseman's going to think a second. I don't know if it was our play or theirs or a combination of both, but we had more trouble with the bigger forecheckers." The line of Bure, Mogilny and Tikkanen did not see much action in the third period. "We weren't getting much going. Me and Alex and Esa couldn't get much," Bure said. "They played really good defense against us. Bure, who has gotten back on track after a slow start, scored the game-winning goal in the third and assisted on earlier markers of Alexander Mogilny and David Roberts. He has a seven-game points streak with seven goals and six assists.

For much of the season's first half, Bure performed like a Lada, sputtering in every zone on the ice. But he appears to be back and. in fact, he told pal Gino Odjick it would likely take him until the new year to return to form.

The carnival, hosted by Vancouver Canucks’ players and their families, will be held on February 16, 1997 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. under the big top at General Motors Place. Tickets can be purchased through the General Motors Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at (604)280-4400. Pavel Bure continued his goal scoring streak, potting in a Mogilny rebound late in the third period. The Kings scored 2 goals on their only 3 shots on goal in the third period over a sluggish Canuck team, who only seemed to come alive in the third period. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Monday, January 6, 1997 The Blast lasts !Pavel Bure continued his recent hot streak with a pair of goals, including a shorthanded tally as the Vancouver Canucks won their third straight game, 5-1 over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Bure, who has five goals in his last three games, snapped a 1-1 tie with his 15th of the season, 6:17 into second period. He took a long clearing pass from Sillinger and beat the defense. Breaking in on goaltender Guy Hebert, he wristed the puck into the top right corner of the net for the go-ahead tally. Bure has a five-game point-scoring streak with five goals and four assists over that span. "My knee is 100 percent, the most important thing for me right now is to stay healthy," said Bure. "When you're out for one year you don't want to jump in there and take chances. Vancouver outshot Toronto 39-22 and scored 3 power play goals on 5 attempts, while Toronto was 0/5. Bure scored his third goal in two games on a first-period breakaway, which was set up by Mogilny. Bure finished with six shots on goal to give him 15 in two games. "I don't know if there's a reason why, we just played well again," said Bure, who showed some rocketpower to pull away from Ellett and Dimitri Yuskevich on the breakaway goal. ----Go back to the Headline list---- Thursday, January 2, 1997 Pavel Remembered !Although he's far from having a stellar season, Pavel Bure has been selected as the Canucks representative in the NHL all-star game Jan.18 at San Jose. It's always nice to go there and play with those kinds of players and be around guys like ( Wayne ) Gretzky, and hopefully ( Paul ) Coffey.", said Bure. The Russian right winger was added to the showcase game by respective Colorado and Dallas GM's Pierre Lacroix and Bob Gainey (of the divisional leaders) despite Bure's troubled season. Asked if he was surprised at being selected, Bure said: "I'm not surprised at anything right now." This will be Bure's third all-star game appearance, having participated in the 1993 and 1994 contests.
----Go back to the Headline list---- At last, Bure & Mogilny are a blast!With Los Angeles goalie Stephane Fiset on the bench, Pavel Bure shot the puck from centre ice and missed a wide open Kings net, and missed out on getting his first hat trick of the season, in beating Los Angeles 4-3. Bure made it 1-0 on a power play at 7:17. Bure parked himself at the edge of the crease to Fiset's left and converted a perfect across-the-crease pass from Mogilny for his first goal since a two-goal game in the 8-0 win over St.Louis way back on Dec.15. "We lost four games. Finally we win," said Bure, who had nine shots on goal.It felt better but I still missed on that open net from the red line." Mogilny made it 2-0 in the second period. Playing shorthanded, Bure sent him in alone on Fiset with a perfect pass. After Los Angeles made it 2-1 at 15:34, Bure restored the two goal lead just 52 seconds later, banging in the rebound of a Mogilny shot.
