Canadian juniors win easily

27th December 1988
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CP) - Reginald Savage of the Victoriaville Tigers scored one goal and assisted on two others as defending champion Canada opened the world junior hockey championships with a 7-1 win over Norway last night.
A pair of Peterborough Petes, Mike Ricci and Corey Foster, added power-play goals for Canada, while penalty-killer Rob Murphy of the Vancouver Canucks scored in the third period while the Canadians were two men short.
Eric Desjardins of the Montreal Canadiens, Darrin Shannon of the Windsor Spitfires and Rob Cimetta of the Toronto Marlboros completed the Canadian scoring before about 1,500 fans.
Excellent goaltending
"What we learned from this is that Norway has excellent goaltending and we really didn't take advantage of our scoring chances," said Canadian coach Tom Webster of Windsor. "The lesson we learned is that we've always got to try and play an up-tempo game.
Canada controlled the game, leading 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after the second at the Fire Lake Recreational Centre in Chugiak, about 20 kilometres outside of Anchorage.
Canada plays the rest of its games in downtown Anchorage at the Sullivan Arena. Next game for the Canadians is tomorrow against West Germany.
The Norwegian goal was by Glenn Asland in the first period against netminder Stephane Fiset of Victoriaville to tie the game 1- 1 at 4:57, just 57 seconds after Savage opened the scoring.
In other games, the Soviet Union, seeking its eighth world junior title in 13 years, opened with a 15-0 rout of West Germany while Sweden defeated Czechoslovakia 5-3.
The Soviets scored five times in the first period, four times in the second and six times in the third.
Dmitry Khristich led the scoring parade with three goals. He was supported by Sergei Sidorov, Victor Gordiuk, Pavel Bure and Alexandr Mogilny, who had two goals apiece.
Status uncertain
The Soviets had a scare in the second period when Mogilny, the leading scorer of last year's tournament, crashed into the boards and was taken off the ice with a leg injury. Mogilny was treated for superficial injuries at a local hospital and released. His status for tonight's game against the United States is uncertain.
Soviet goalies Aleksky Ivashkin and Maxim Mikhailovsky turned away 35 shots for the shutout.
Sweden jumped to a 3-0 lead and survived a third-period rally by Czechoslovakia. Two goals by Ola Rosander and one by Daniel Rydmark provided the lead.
Two quick goals by Roman Kontsek, at 28 seconds and 2:28 into the final period, pulled Czechoslovakia within 3-2. But Patrik Erickson knocked in an errant Czechoslovak pass 4:50 into the final period, and Patrik Kjellberg followed with a power-play goal to put the game out of reach.
Kontsek's third goal of the game, with 3:09 left, closed the scoring.

Canada now faces hard part
- - Vancouver Sun
31st December 1988
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Unbeaten in three starts, Canada faces its toughest challenges this weekend at the world junior hockey championships.
The Canadians play Sweden (2-1) tonight and Czechoslovakia (2-2) Sunday in the eight-country round-robin tournament that continues through Jan. 4.
Canada is matched against the Soviet Union in the final round.
The Soviets Friday won their fourth straight, a 10-0 romp over Norway, while the United States won its first, 5-1 over the Czechs.
Jason Glickman stopped 34 of 35 shots as the U.S. stayed in medal contention. The 19-year-old from Chicago, who was benched midway through the 5-1 loss to Canada on Thursday, was beaten on a screened shot by Czechoslovakia's Jan Varholik.
Mike Modano, Peter Ciavaglia, Ted Crowley, David Emma and Joe Sacca scored for the United States.
The Soviets got two goals each from Pavel Bure, Roman Oksuta and Sergei Gomoliko and have outscored opponents 32-4 in four games.
Meanwhile, tournament directors failed Friday to solve the mystery of the second puck.
Referee Steve Piotrowski disallowed a late goal by Sweden after a second puck suddenly appeared on the ice in front of the Soviet Union's net during Thursday's game won by the Soviets, 3-2.
Following a three-hour meeting Friday the directors issued a statement to support Piotrowski's decision, saying they could not determine where the second puck had come from.
Sean Draper of Toronto, son of Canadian team manager Dave Draper, videotaped the Sweden-Soviet game and said, "the second puck definitely came from a player. It didn't come from off the ice.
"Two players collided in front of the net and suddenly the puck was there."
Draper said the Soviet players in question were team captain Sergei Federov and defenceman Alexandr Godynuk.
